Brentino Belluno

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,406 · Postal code: 37020

In the province of Verona there is another Belluno: Belluno Veronese, which in 1929 was joined to Brentino in a single municipality. The town hall, though, stands in neither of the two, but in a third hamlet, Rivalta. The two names may share the root of the Belluno on the Piave, the Celtic bel, shining; Brentino instead would come from a Germanic word for basin or fountain.

In 1968, while they were digging for the Brenner motorway, at Servasa the walls of a mansio came to light, the inn where those travelling on the via Claudia Augusta ate, slept and changed horses: it stayed in use for three centuries. Below it, the excavations carried out between 2004 and 2010 found a settlement older than the Romans, a sign that people were already passing this way.
