Bussolengo

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 19,483 · Postal code: 37012

Families across northern Italy know Bussolengo for Parco Natura Viva, the large zoological garden with safari drive that is also one of Europe's reference centres for endangered-species conservation: animals are bred and reintroduced here, exchanged with zoos across the continent. It is the attraction that put the town on the family-travel map.

The municipality of 19,483 on the Adige, between Verona and Lake Garda, has far older farming roots: the church of San Valentino, frescoed inside and out, keeps the fishermen's patron, and blossoming peach orchards once coloured the whole plain. Ten minutes from the lake, it now makes a shrewd base for dodging lakeside prices.
