Around 50 BC somebody buried his savings along the bank of the Cavariolo, at Borghesana, beside the road that ran alongside the course of the Tartaro. In all likelihood he was a man about to leave for the civil war between Caesar and Pompey, and he never came back for them. The two containers came to light, one in 1888 and the other in 1901, dug up by farm labourers: inside were more than two thousand coins, struck between 206 and 51 BC, denarii, quinarii and two asses. They call it the hoard of Sustinenza.

The other treasure of Casaleone is bigger still: on the boundary with Sanguinetto, in the only building in the area identifiable as a villa, the Venera hoard was found, made up of some fifty thousand coins of the third century AD. Before the Romans, however, there was almost nobody here: throughout the Iron Age the Valli Grandi were subject to flooding and marsh, and it was the Roman centuriation, with the clearing and draining it involved, that made living here possible; the first farms rose along the watercourses. The first document naming the village is from 1104, when countess Matilda of Canossa confirmed to the monastery of Polirone the property she held there. Today the fields give Vialone Nano rice and the red radicchio of Verona.
