The name comes from the manso, which in the Middle Ages was a farming unit: a stretch of cultivated land with a farmhouse on it. The village was called villa Mansorum, the village of the mansi. The first church was built in 1359, and it was the first convenient one for the boatmen of the Adige and for the people living round about.
Two singular men came out of this village. The abbot Francesco Boaretti translated the Iliad neither into Paduan nor into Venetian, but into a middle Venetian made on purpose to be understood in every city of the Serenissima: he published it under the title «Omero in Lombardia» and it was a success well beyond the Veneto. And Fausto Zonaro, born here in 1854, ended as the last court painter of the Ottoman Empire.
