Erbè

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,841 · Postal code: 37060

Erbè is a village of water: the Tartaro and the Tione run through it, and the fields are irrigated with resurgence water, which is why vialone nano rice is grown here. The public greenery is out of all proportion for so small a place: the park of the two Tioni stretches in an L and holds inside it a ninth-century church, Santa Maria Novella di Erbedello.

For centuries the land belonged not to the village but to an abbey: San Zeno of Verona, which made of it a monastic fief. In 1668 the fief reached its greatest extent, taking in Roncolevà, Moratica, San Pietro in Valle, Granarolo and Trevenzuolo. Napoleon abolished it in 1797: the abbey's estates went to the state, but Erbè did not, and became a free comune. Its two feasts are of the duck and of the melon.
