Fumane

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 4,151 · Postal code: 37022

In Roman times Fumane was the administrative centre of the Arusnates, a native people whose pagus lay in the Valpolicella; in the early Middle Ages the area was called Val de sala, a Lombard place name, and a privilege granted by Frederick Barbarossa in 1151 confirms that there was a castle here. Under Venice the village belonged to the vicariate of the Valpolicella, with a statute of its own that confirmed the administrative and fiscal autonomy already granted by the Scaligeri. In the hamlet of Molina a prehistoric site has come to light that is reckoned among the most important in Europe.

The valley is farmed in terraces, called marogne in dialect, and the best vines stand up there; the fields of cereals and the mulberry trees, common until the middle of the twentieth century, have vanished altogether. The name too is on the move: on the fourteenth of March 2024 the council voted to call itself Fumane di Valpolicella, with no need of a referendum because the quorum was reached in the assembly, and the matter now rests with the Region.
