In May 2020, under a vineyard, the mosaic floor of a third-century Roman villa came back to light: they had been looking for it for almost a hundred years, and in the end it turned up intact among the rows of Amarone.
The name appears in 1046 as Negrario, from the Latin nigrariu, «black earth»; the «di Valpolicella» was added by the inhabitants themselves, by referendum, in 2019. Above the village, the Prun quarries cut flagstone and rosso ammonitico out of the mountainside for centuries, and at Novare iron was mined from two thousand metres of tunnels, now hunting ground for seekers of quartz and amethyst. There are 16,935 residents.
