Crespadoro

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,452 · Postal code: 36070

In 1287 bishop Bartolomeo Della Scala gave people who had come from Germany some lands of the Lessini in return for the tithe: among themselves they were tzimbar, which in their language means woodcutter, and from that came the name Cimbri. In 1404 Crespadoro gave itself to Venice and took on the watching of the border with the Trentino against smuggling: in exchange it paid no taxes.

In July 1944 the village square was set on fire, and seven partisans who had taken refuge on the nearby mountains were tied to a wall of the square and killed after a summary trial held in a room of the town hall. The civilian victims were twenty-eight, and the comune has been given the silver medal.
