Feast of San Martino
📅 Every year, on the first Sunday after 1 November
On the first Sunday after 1 November Asigliano Veneto, a municipality of 877 inhabitants in the province of Vicenza, celebrates its patron San Martino (Saint Martin).
Asigliano Veneto lies in the southernmost plain of the Vicenza province, crossed by the Ronego: not a natural river but a canal dug by the Romans along the lines of the centuriation, to drain the marshes left by the old course of the Adige. The village had a castle of the bishop-counts of Vicenza, listed among those exempted from the fodro in the diplomas of Frederick Barbarossa in 1158 and Frederick II in 1220; in Ezzelino's time it fell to the bishop's enemies through the betrayal of a certain Galeda, and it was destroyed — probably after 1311, in the wars between Padua and the Scaligeri. No ruins are left, because the stone was needed elsewhere: the castle survives only on the municipal coat of arms, drawn in invented colours.
In 1404 the Vicenza territory passed to Venice, but Venetian nobles never bought land here: it had already been drained and cost too much compared with the neighbouring villages. So Asigliano was left without masters and without money, self-governing and off the main roads. In the sixteenth century the educated people of the area were drawn to Anabaptist ideas, meeting at the Casamento Vela, and there Angelica Piovene Pigafetta took refuge after being condemned for heresy. Today the village is known for its red radicchio and, since 2008, for the artistic nativity set up behind the high altar of the church of San Martino.
