Cologna Veneta

Province: Verona · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,607 · Postal code: 37044

In 1406 Doge Michele Steno put an end to the feuding of the local lordlings in a summary fashion: he attached Cologna to the sestiere of Dorsoduro, which made a village on the Veronese plain an administrative piece of the city of Venice. It stayed Venetian until 1797. Meanwhile the river Guà ran through the middle of the built-up area and flooded it now and then.

After yet another flood, in 1882, it was decided to move its bed: the works lasted until 1904, and digging the new channel at Baldaria turned up so much prehistoric material that an archaeological museum grew out of it. Today, though, the name of Cologna travels above all thanks to mandorlato, the Christmas sweet that from here has reached well beyond Veneto.
