Enego

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,825 · Postal code: 36052

Enego stands on the eastern edge of the plateau of the Seven Comuni, and it is the comune farthest from Vicenza. In the Middle Ages the plateau was settled by people from Bavaria and Tyrol, the Cimbri, who kept their language and customs for centuries: in Cimbrian the village is called Ghenebe. In 1310 the seven comuni joined in a regency that lasted under the Scaligeri, the Visconti and Venice, until 1797.

In the First World War the plateau was the front: they fought on the Ortigara, Enego was wrecked and its people were evacuated as far as southern Italy. In the Second, fifteen families of Jewish refugees were interned here; when the Germans came they all left together, on 17 September 1943, heading for the zones already liberated. All of them survived but one: Marian Reicher, taken near Rome and killed at the Fosse Ardeatine in 1944.
