Feast of Maria Santissima Assunta
📅 Every year, on 15 August
On 15 August Foza, a municipality of 717 inhabitants in the province of Vicenza, celebrates its patroness Maria Santissima Assunta (Assumption of Mary).
Foza stands on the Asiago plateau at a little under eleven hundred metres, and is the second highest municipal seat in the province of Vicenza. Its first written mention is of 29 April 1085, and it is the oldest known among all the Seven Communes: Fugia was then a mountain belonging to the Da Romano lords, who gave it to a Cluniac monastery. The name almost certainly comes from the Cimbrian fukscia, beech wood — in Cimbrian the village is still called Vüsche — and the beech also appeared on the old municipal arms.
After the year one thousand the plateau was settled by Bavarian and Tyrolean people, the Cimbri, who kept their own language and customs for centuries; their communities joined in the Federation of the Seven Communes, which outlived the Visconti and stood on under Venice, to which Foza gave itself on 20 February 1405. Then came the Great War, which on the plateau lasted all forty-one months of the conflict: on the Melette of Foza is set Emilio Lussu's Un anno sull'Altipiano. The village was levelled by the shelling and rebuilt in the nineteen-twenties, when the people came back from their refuge: hence the wide square it has today.
