Read more →Valbrenta has 5,385 inhabitants and was born on 30 January 2019 from the merger of Campolongo sul Brenta, Cismon del Grappa, San Nazario and Valstagna; the referendum had been held in five comuni, but at Solagna the no prevailed and Solagna stayed out. The seat is at Carpanè, and the coat of arms holds the four villages together: the lion of Saint Mark, the mountains with the flag, the dolphin with the caduceus and a tobacco plant.
The comune takes in almost the whole valley of the Brenta, closed to the west by the plateau of the Seven Comuni and to the east by the Grappa massif. At Oliero the church of the Santo Spirito was built along with a Benedictine cenobium by Ezzelino II da Romano, who retired there in 1221. At Cismon the Madonna del Pedancino is venerated, a wooden Virgin and Child of the late fifteenth century: the flood of 1748 carried her away, and she was found again thirty kilometres downstream.
