Piovene Rocchette

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 8,295 · Postal code: 36013

In 1311 the municipality of Piovene bought part of Monte Summano from the city of Vicenza, including the patch at the top where the friars' house was later built: a village that buys its own mountain. The Summano is cone-shaped and looks like a volcano, but it is limestone on a basalt pedestal, and pilgrims have been climbing it for centuries.

In 1816, while digging the foundations of the bell tower, a Roman gravestone came to light: that of Papiria Maxima for her mother Letilia Macrina. Today it is set into the wall around the presbytery. The town's second name is recent: Rocchette was added in 1933, when that district mattered for the Rossi woollen mills, the railway station and the breweries.
