Carrè had a statute of its own, proclaimed on the twenty-fifth of January 1272 by Uberto, son of Caprello, of the Capra family that held the fief: it fixed relations with the lord and set out the rules of farming life. The castle on the hill, however, always remained the private property of the Capra, and the community never had jurisdiction over it, so much so that in the sixteenth century the vicinie, the village assemblies, gathered each time in a different place. In 1413 a band of Hungarians turned up demanding surrender, waving the banners of the Carraresi and the Scaligeri to deceive the defenders: they kept faith with Venice even at the cost of being slaughtered, and the Republic rewarded that loyalty by lifting the salt duty. Then, again by order of Venice, the castle was dismantled.

Boundaries have always been argued here. In 1623 a long lawsuit with Chiuppano over a fief of a hundred and eighty campi ended with the two villages fixing the borders they still have; in 1814 they were joined into a single municipality, and in 1911 Chiuppano won its independence after a struggle waged mainly by staying away from council meetings. As for the name, it may come from the Latin carrus, a station where carts were changed, or from the Celtic car, stone: the stones the inhabitants cleared from the fields for centuries, piled into the masiere along the roads and ending up under the asphalt when the roads were surfaced.
