Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary
📅 Every year, on 7 October
On 7 October Caltrano celebrates Our Lady of the Rosary, one of the town's patrons; the main patron is Saint Blaise, on 3 February.
The territory of this comune has the shape of an irregular rectangle that starts from the left bank of the Astico, climbs the slopes of the Asiago plateau and, once over its rim, continues across a wide mountain area: half the communal surface is up there, above one thousand three hundred metres, among pastures and woods of beech and conifer. Those mountains were for centuries a matter of dispute with Chiuppano, the village on the other bank of the torrent, and the question was closed — or at least regulated — by a sentence of 26 April 1399, whereby the people of the two villages could make use of the common goods on the mountains Paù, Zovo del Beco, Beccaria and Ancuanum. There is a paradox, though, that says a great deal about how things worked: although half the comune lies on the plateau, from the middle of the fourteenth century until 1797 Caltrano depended on the civil vicariate of Schio, and so never had the privileges of the Sette Comuni, which answered directly to Venice. The land of the plateau yes, the rights of the plateau no.
The other wealth is water: in the alluvial belt the springs are abundant and the village has never had supply problems, so much so that during the First World War the water for the front was drawn here — the tanks of the two pumping stations, Rovolo and Foraoro, are still there. On the name there are four hypotheses. The historian Giovanni Mantese derives it from a fundus Cartorianus, that is from the Latin cardus, the teasel with which wool-workers combed wool; a second links it to the paper mills that used the water of the torrent; a third to a Vicus Caletranus of Roman date. The fourth is a legend, and it is worth telling: a princess named Caltrana is said to have donated a quantity of silver coins, later melted into the smallest of the bells that still hang in the tower on the square. Real coins, meanwhile, came out by the thousand in 1894 in the locality of Castellare — Roman vittoriati hidden, it is thought, by Euganean people who came down to raid the plain and who had never bent to Rome.
