Solagna

Province: Vicenza · Region: Veneto · Population: 1,895 · Postal code: 36020

The name is attested early: Solane in 917, Solania in 983, Solagna in 1155. That it comes from «sun» is disputed, because the village is not a sunny one; but precisely for that reason Giovan Battista Pellegrini does not rule out an antiphrasis. Dante Olivieri prefers the Latin personal name Solanius; and some bring in Antenor and a nymph called Sola.

In the diploma that gives the oldest form of the name, the emperor Berengar entrusted the bishops of Padua with jurisdiction over the canal, and with it an obligation: to fortify it, to stop the Hungarian raids. The castle is known from 1189 and was dismantled in 1625. Much higher up, at Ponte San Lorenzo, stands a column given by the city of Rome: it marks the point where the Austro-Hungarian offensive was stopped.
