Paglieta

Province: Chieti · Region: Abruzzo · Population: 4,466 · Postal code: 66020

The name is either fodder or a hut: at the end of the twelfth century the place is Palletum and Castrum Palletae, and the root lies in palea, fodder, or in pagliara, the clay house — as the houses of the first settlement were, whose people were scattered by Saracen raids. The first written mention is from 1087, when Paglieta appears among seven castles that the diocese of Chieti made over to the monastery of San Giovanni in Venere. The coat of arms carries five ears of wheat beneath an antique crown.

The medieval walls can still be read while walking through the village: a few towers survive, the pointed arch of the gate, and above all the bell tower of the parish church, which is a medieval tower — you still enter the old borough through it, by the Porta della Torre. In the eighteenth century the houses ate the walls: a round tower in via delle Torri became a dwelling and was built up higher. In the Second World War the village lay on the Gustav Line and was occupied first by the Germans and then by the British, yet came through undamaged; the church of San Rocco spent the war as a stable and an arms store.
