Brusson

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 852 · Postal code: 11022

Between 1902 and 1908 an English company, the Évançon Gold Mining Company, worked the gold-bearing quartz veins of the Chamousira mine above Brusson: real gold, in the Val d'Ayas. The tunnels reopened as a museum site in 2015.

In the Middle Ages the land belonged to the abbey of Saint-Maurice d'Agaune, in the Valais, which leased it to the lords of Challant: they always declared they held it in fief from the abbey, and did so from 1263 onwards. Higher up lie the Palasina lakes, one of them named the lake of the Battle; in the 1920s a dam created the reservoir that feeds the Isollaz power station down a 600-metre drop. The 852 residents live in the middle Val d'Ayas.

📅 Every year, on 22 September
