Gressoney-Saint-Jean

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 814 · Postal code: 11025

Titsch, the local Walser dialect, is still spoken here: the village is called Greschòney Zer Chilchu, and the valley divides into Onderteil, Méttelteil and Oberteil, the lower, middle and upper parts. Scholars offer several readings of the name Gressoney; the most credible is Chreschen-eye, watercress flat, though no document confirms it.

The main village sits at 1,385 metres at the foot of Monte Rosa, and from the Obre Platz the view ends against the Lys glacier, 1,078 hectares, the largest on the Italian side of the massif. Above it stand Castor and the Lyskamm. The 814 residents have Castel Savoia with its botanical garden and Villa Margherita, now the town hall; Walser architecture survives in the hamlets.

📅 Every year, on 24 June

On 24 June Gressoney-Saint-Jean celebrates the saint it is named after. The Walser village also has a custom all its own: on the evening of 31 December the young people go round the houses singing the Neujahrslied.
