Feast of Saint Vincent
📅 Every year, on 22 January
On 22 January Saint-Vincent celebrates Saint Vincent of Saragossa, who gives the town its name and his own to its 12th-century Romanesque church.
In 1770 the physician Jean-Baptiste Perret found the mineral spring that changed the town's fortunes. A century later Saint-Vincent was billing itself as the Riviera of the Alps: the Fons Salutis spa was linked to the centre by funicular, and the Grand Hotel Billia supplied the Belle Époque backdrop. The Casino de la Vallée has been dealing cards since 1946.
Older layers survive underneath the resort. The Romanesque parish church of the twelfth century sits on a pre-Romanesque crypt, and traces of the Roman bridge over the Cillian torrent still mark the route of the via delle Gallie. The town of 4,654 has hosted Italy's oldest journalism award, the Premio Saint-Vincent, since 1948.
