The province of Aosta is a historical footnote, not a living administrative unit. Created in 1927 as a province of Piedmont, it was dissolved in 1945; in 1946 the historic Valle d'Aosta territory became an autonomous district, and the 1948 Constitution turned it into the Autonomous Region of Valle d'Aosta. What remains is an alpine territory of 74 municipalities with Aosta as its main town, where place names stayed French — Châtillon, Saint-Vincent, Pont-Saint-Martin.
Courmayeur pulls more visitors than Aosta itself, and it is where the Skyway Monte Bianco starts, on the Italian side of Mont Blanc. The rest runs to castles and water: Fénis castle, the fortress at Bard, the thermal baths of Pré-Saint-Didier, all close to one another. Aosta itself is worth half a day and makes the practical base, since nothing here is far enough to justify changing hotels.
