Challand-Saint-Anselme

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 756 · Postal code: 11020

In 1928 the Fascist government merged Challand-Saint-Anselme with neighbouring Saint-Victor into a single comune, with the seat in the other village's town hall: the people took it badly. In 1939 the name was Italianised to Villa Sant'Anselmo, as happened to thirty-two other comuni in the valley. The two were re-established in September 1946.

The territory formed part of the fief that gave its name to the viscounts of Aosta, who became lords and then counts of Challant in 1424. The parish is more recent: bishop Pierre-François de Sales created it in 1746, choosing Anselm of Aosta as patron. The 756 residents live in the Val d'Ayas, between Challand-Saint-Victor below and Brusson above.
