Montjovet

Province: Aosta · Region: Aosta Valley · Population: 1,831 · Postal code: 11020

The Mongiovetta, the stretch of main road that climbs above the village, was opened in 1771 at the expense of the Duchy of Aosta: king Charles Emmanuel III authorised the work to help trade and the thermal waters of Saint-Vincent, and a stone above the first hairpins still records it.

The comune stretches from the 370 metres of Plout to the 2,174 of Mont Lyan, across both sides of the valley: a position that for centuries made it an obligatory passage towards France and Switzerland, and that explains the castles of Chenal and Saint-Germain. The fields of its 1,831 residents are watered by the Rû d'Arlaz, cut in the fifteenth century to bring the Evançon onto the sunlit slopes.

The Nativity of Mary and Montjovet's two communities

📅 Every year, on 8 September

On 8 September Montjovet celebrates the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: the town has two parish churches, one at Berriat and one at Saint-Germain, and both appear on its coat of arms.
