Feast of Saint Potitus
📅 Every year, on 14 January and 17 July
Tricarico celebrates its patron, Saint Potitus, twice a year: on 14 January and on 17 July.
In Tricarico the old town reads like a map of who passed through: in the Ràbata and Saracena quarters, which were Arab, the streets tangle and end in blind alleys; in the Norman quarters of Monte and Piano they run straight and parallel, joined by flights of steps. You only have to walk to see where one city ends and another begins.
The cathedral was built at the wish of Robert Guiscard, and there in 1383 Louis I of Anjou was crowned king of Naples. Of the walled town there remains the Norman tower, twenty-seven metres high with walls over five metres thick. Outside, at Grottone, stands a downy oak 614 years old: the oldest oak known in Basilicata. There are 5,669 residents.
