The patron saint of Colobraro is Saint Nicholas, celebrated on 9 May, patron of the mother church of San Nicola di Bari. The town was assigned in the mid-14th century to the Poderico family, later passing to the Pignatelli and then to the Carafa, who held it as a principality from 1617, finally reaching the Donnaperna: the Carafa castle still recalls today this long succession of noble houses.
After Italian unification, the town was upended by the phenomenon of brigandage, with the bands of Egidio Pugliese, Francesco Tuzio and Francesco Gulfo active in the area; under fascism, some opponents of the regime, Jewish refugees and Roma were interned at Colobraro. The town also preserves the church of Santa Maria della Neve, the Chapel of the Icon and the Franciscan convent.
