Feast of San Rocco
📅 Every year, on 17 and 18 August
On 17 and 18 August San Giorgio Lucano, a municipality of 1,290 inhabitants in the province of Matera, celebrates its patron San Rocco with a procession through the streets of the village.
The town was founded in 1534 by Albanian refugees, and they called it Minullo, which means small: in the count of 1595 it was taxed for two hearths only. Today's name comes from Giorgio Castriota Scanderbeg, the Albanian hero.
But the Albanians did not stay: at the start of the seventeenth century the prince of Noia drove them out of the hamlet and put in settlers taken from the neighbouring villages, and the document that founds the town as it is now dates from 1607. Under fascism San Giorgio served for internal exile: Camilla Ravera was sent here too. There are 1,290 residents.
