The patron saint of Albano di Lucania is Saint Vitus, celebrated on 15 June together with Saints Modestus and Crescentia. The townspeople's veneration of the saint dates from 1773, the year in which the Sacred Congregation of Rites elected him protector of the town at the request of the clergy and people of Albano.
The church of Santa Maria Assunta almost certainly stands on an earlier paleo-Christian place of worship: between the 13th and 14th centuries the present Romanesque-style church was built, initially dedicated to the Madonna della Neve and only rededicated to Mary from 1924. The main façade, closed off from that same year, was built in Neoclassical style, in sharp contrast with the building's predominant Romanesque style, with a pointed-arch portal topped by a central rose window and two smaller side ones; since then the main entrance has been the smaller portal on the right side façade. The 18th-century stone bell tower carries a 1967 spire, built after lightning struck down the older one in 1963, and has six bells.
