Anzi

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,765 · Postal code: 85010

On the summit of Monte Siri there is an astronomical observatory with a planetarium, running since 2008 and kept by a volunteer association. On the same mountain, a little lower, stand the church of Santa Maria with its Todisco frescoes and a late-Gothic portal of 1525, and the remains of a castle of 1091.

Anzi lies at 1008 metres and is the third highest comune in Basilicata. On 12 June the young people burn the broom they have been gathering since May and carry the wooden guglie with the image of Sant'Antonio through the bonfires, walking on the embers: the crossing means the saint has beaten evil. There are 1,765 residents.

📅 Every year, on 7 August; on 12-13 June the bonfires in honour of Saint Anthony
