Abriola

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,571 · Postal code: 85010

On the coat of arms of Abriola there is an oak on a three-peaked mount, and a wild boar crossing through it. The name comes from Briola, the hunting ground of a Lombard count, and the arms do nothing but repeat it. The count arrived in 907, when the citadel passed from the Saracens to the Lombard Sirifo.

The Saracens had fortified it in the ninth century, after taking Conza in 872, to keep an eye on the valley. Much later, in 1809, the band of Domenico Rizzo, known as Taccone, wiped out here the whole family of baron Federici: the thick woods around were the right place for men who lived by raiding. There are 1,571 residents.
