Avigliano

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 11,796 · Postal code: 85021

In the woods of Lagopesole, a frazione of Avigliano, post-unification brigandage had its base: Carmine Crocco's band was quartered there, and the other chief, Ninco Nanco, was an Avigliano man. Yet when Crocco tried to take the town on 19 November 1861, the townspeople met him under arms and drove him off, and the provincial council declared them deserving of the nation.

Above Lagopesole stands the castle where Frederick II came in summer to hunt with falcons, and where the fifth council of Melfi was held in 1137. Then came emigration: between 1884 and 1913 nine thousand people left Avigliano for the United States, and it was they who paid for the war memorial. The population is 11,796.

Saint Vitus and the Madonna del Carmine

📅 Every year, on 15 June; the feast of the Carmine on 16 July

Avigliano's patron is Saint Vitus, on 15 June, but the greatest religious feast is that of the Carmine: since 1696, every 16 July, the Virgin comes down from the mountain to the town and then goes back up.
