Baragiano

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,675 · Postal code: 85050

The name, they say, comes from Barragium, the place where the toll was paid: below the crag passed the flocks going up from the plain to the pastures of the Foi at Picerno. Others pull it from Ara Jani, the altar of Janus. At the foot of the rock the Isca and the Marmo join and become the Platano.

That the town was born up there is what the digs say: in contrada Braida finds and stretches of wall of the sixth and fifth centuries BC have come to light. Up top the ruins of the castle are left; in the church of the Assunta there is a wooden crucifix of the seventeenth century and a wooden Madonna del Carmine of the sixteenth. There are 2,675 residents.
