Filiano

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 3,089 · Postal code: 85020

The town is named after a family. The Pace came here to clear land, and to tell themselves apart from the other Pace they took to calling themselves the Filiani, from the Latin filius: they lived together like sons of a single father, holding everything in common. Their farmstead became the contrada delli Filiani, then Filiani, then Filiano.

What drew them was the policy of Andrea Doria, who bought the fief of Lagopesole in 1531, had a land of solid woodland cleared and offered easy rents to whoever came to work it. In 1858 a geographical dictionary records a village of 400 people; the comune itself arrived in 1951, when thirty hamlets north of Avigliano won their autonomy. There are 3,089 residents.
