The patron of Avigliano is Saint Vitus, celebrated on 15 June. The town's most important religious feast, however, is another one: that of Santa Maria del Carmine, held every 16 July since 1696.
Two things were made in order to celebrate it: a statue of the Virgin, which every 16 July comes down from the chapel to the town and then returns, and a chapel on the highest mountain of the district, the Montagnola, which has been called Monte Carmine ever since. The procession had once been suspended because of the incidents that occurred during it, which drew in the neighbouring towns as well; then it was decided to restore the old custom.
