In Pietragalla the wine was made underground, in the palmenti: a village of small cells cut into the rock, each with two or three basins inside. The grapes arrived on muleback, were trodden barefoot in the upper basin and the must ran down into the lower one; above the door a slit let out the carbon dioxide, which would otherwise have killed the men working.

After some twenty days the wine went into barrels and ended up in the cellars, the rutt, north of the centre. The coat of arms carries a cockerel on three mountains — Terra, Serra and San Michele — with three towers, which are the three arches you enter the old town by. There are 4,267 residents, at 839 metres.

Saint Theodosius, the martyr patron celebrated in May instead of autumn

📅 Every year, on 10 May (liturgical date in October)

Pietragalla celebrates Saint Theodosius the martyr on 10 May: although the saint's liturgical date falls in October, the feast was moved to spring, with fireworks displays every morning in the preceding week and the town band parading through the streets.
