Ruoti

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 3,542 · Postal code: 85056

In the tax register of 1508 the Terra di Ruoti is recorded as uninhabited: epidemics had driven the people out into the fields. It was the count of Muro, Jacopo Alfonso Ferilli, who put it back on its feet: in 1511 he let in a colony of Albanians, Spanish and French families followed, and by 1561 there were 91 hearths.

Between 1940 and 1943 seven German Jewish refugees, families with children among them, were sent here under forced residence: the Allied advance freed them in September 1943. The name is still a puzzle: some derive it from the Latin rotum, land fit for ploughing, others from the Albanians who used to gather in a ring. There are 3,542 residents.

📅 Every year, on 16 August and the first Sunday of September

Ruoti celebrates Saint Roch on 16 August and the first Sunday of September; the chapel where his cult began, in the Spinosa district, was built by the feudal lord during the plague of 1651.
