The patron saint of Campomaggiore is Our Lady of Mount Carmel, celebrated on 16 July, venerated in the Chiesa di Maria Santissima del Carmelo. A local legend tells that on 2 February 1885 the Madonna del Carmelo, protectress of the town, warned two farmers who were passing by with their mules of the imminent disaster: shortly afterwards, indeed, a landslide would destroy the entire old village.
The old settlement, today known as Campomaggiore Vecchio, was considered in its time a livable, peaceful and forward-looking place, so much so that it was called the «city of utopia»: because of the 1885 landslide, the original settlement was abandoned, becoming a ghost town, today open to visitors and told in the Museo Utopia. The town also preserves the Palazzo baronale Cutinelli-Rendina, the Cappella Cutinelli-Rendina and the Casino della Contessa.
