Feast of San Donato
📅 Every year, on 12 August
On 12 August Carbone, a municipality of 705 inhabitants in the province of Potenza, celebrates its patron San Donato.
In 1860, when the plebiscite for unification was voted, at Carbone they burned the ballot urns. The rebellion was paid for dearly: in February of the following year some young men of the town were shot, accused of dodging the draft and condemned without trial.
The town had grown around the Basilian monastery of Sant'Elia, whose first document is of 1041, and in 1167 the abbey of Santi Elia e Anastasio was the centre of gravity of the Basilians of southern Italy. Until 1716 Carbone was nullius diocesis: it belonged to no bishopric and answered directly to Rome. There are 705 residents.
