San Chirico Raparo

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 1,161 · Postal code: 85030

The Trigella stream goes away in autumn and comes back in spring: the ground is karst and the water drinks itself down. At the foot of Monte Raparo two sulphurous springs come out instead, the Santa Quaranta and the Cortignano, which were used for the skin and for rheumatism.

Above the town is the abbey of Sant'Angelo al Monte Raparo, with the monks' cells cut into the rock, and near it a cave with stalagmites and a San Michele painted on the wall. In the town, in via Roma, a private owner keeps a tailoring museum: work from the eighteenth century to the nineteen-seventies and a collection of irons that begins in the fifteenth century. There are 1,161 residents.
