The patroness of Noepoli is the Madonna of Constantinople, celebrated on 6 August. In 1404, as a reward for its neutrality during a feudal revolt against the crown, the town entered the royal demesne and the settlement was fortified with the erection of a castle, built in the 15th century with a fine stone portal decorated in the 18th century: today the seat of the town hall, the castle ideally divides the old nucleus into two parts, the old town around the fortress, called Torretta e Terra, and the district called Casale.
The town stands on an ancient Oenotrian or Lucanian settlement, whose necropolis has yielded finds now on display at the national archaeological museum of the Siritide in Policoro. After the abolition of feudalism in 1806 and the royal assent of Victor Emmanuel II, in 1863 the town, then called Noja, changed its name to today's Noepoli, meaning «new city» in Greek.
