Pignola

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 6,699 · Postal code: 85010

They call it the village of doorways, and it is not a figure of speech: in the old centre the entrances to the houses are carved one by one, and they are worth the walk more than any single monument. It was Vineola, then Vignola; from 1863 Pignola di Basilicata, and only from 1935 plain Pignola.

Down at Pantano lies a lake born from a marsh drained in the twentieth century, now a regional reserve and a WWF oasis. Pignola and Potenza quarrelled over that water for years: in 1747 they went to court over the lake and the woods around it, which at the time meant fish and good straw. The 6,699 residents live at 927 metres.
