Tito

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 7,172 · Postal code: 85050

Tito sits on the watershed, and you can see it in the water: two streams rise in its territory and end in two different seas. The Tora runs into the Basento and reaches the Ionian; the fiumara di Tito joins the Sele and comes out in the Tyrrhenian. The same rainstorm, a few hundred metres apart, takes opposite roads.

Above the town stands the Torre di Satriano: a Norman tower, the remains of a cathedral and an archaeological site yielding material as far back as the seventh century BC, when a sanctuary to the goddess Mefitis stood here. The 7,172 residents live lower down, in a town rebuilt more than once: the earthquake of 1857 killed 9,257 people in Basilicata alone.

Saint Laviero, the martyr saved from wild beasts and beheaded at Grumentum

📅 Every year, on 7 September and 17 November

Tito celebrates Saint Laviero the martyr on 7 September and 17 November, the anniversary of his martyrdom in 312 AD: according to legend, the wild beasts to which he was thrown crouched at his feet, and an angel freed him from prison before he was finally captured and beheaded before the people.
