San Martino d'Agri

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 825 · Postal code: 85030

For eleven months of the year San Martino d'Agri counts a little over eight hundred people. In August it counts twice that: the Sammartinesi come back from North and South America, from Australia, for the feast of the Madonna della Rupe, and for a few days the town looks like what it used to be.

What it used to be is in the figures: 2,000 residents in 1896, 1,300 in 1929, after emigration to the Americas had emptied the houses. The Madonna's chapel stands on top of Monte Raparello, bare and stony, and people walk up in pilgrimage in May and in August. There are 825 residents.
