Armento

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 679 · Postal code: 85010

From a tomb at Serra Lustrante, in the nineteenth century, came the crown of Kritonios: gold leaves and branches woven together, of the fourth century BC. Today it is in Munich, along with the kneeling Satyr; the bronze Rider found here is in the British Museum in London.

Armento stands on ancient Galasa, a city about which little is known: pieces of its walls remain, and a few sacred places. The mother church is of 1957, rebuilt after the old one, which was of 1040, collapsed, and it holds the remains of San Luca abate. In the chapel of San Vitale, which was the crypt of the old church, there are seventeenth-century frescoes of the saint's life. There are 679 residents.
