Tolve

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 3,361 · Postal code: 85017

The coat of arms of Tolve shows a castle with three towers, but Tolve never had a castle: what enclosed the borgo was a wall, a fortification wrapped around the whole old centre. Of the quarter still called Castello only scant traces are left, eaten away by earthquakes.

At the foot of Monte Moltone a Lucanian villa of the fourth century BC came to light: when it was excavated, its bathroom turned out to be the oldest known example in the world of a bath with drainage pipes. In a Byzantine document of 1001 the catapan Gregorios Tarkaneiotes names Tolve and five of its inhabitants, among them a Sighenoulphos, Lombard at least in name. There are 3,361 residents.
