Saint Blaise, patron of a village of stone and cinema
📅 Every year, on 3 February
Cancellara celebrates Saint Blaise on 3 February; its old stone-built centre has served as a film set twice, including one movie shot right around its medieval castle.
The town is said to have been made by one Petruccio Cancellario, a thirteenth-century lord who also founded Pietragalla; his tomb is in the chapel of Santa Caterina d'Alessandria, here in the town. On the name, some prefer instead the Latin ager cancellatus, the fenced camp where prisoners of war were kept.
The old centre is all in stone and almost intact, with the gates of the borgo, the eighteenth-century portals and the monumental fountains; above it stands the castle, damaged by the earthquake of 1694. To eat there is the salsiccia a catena, cased and then twisted on itself into three or four rings: it is celebrated on 3 February. There are 1,396 residents.
