Vaglio Basilicata

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 2,074 · Postal code: 85010

At Rossano di Vaglio stood the federal sanctuary of the Lucanians, the place where the whole people gathered: it was dedicated to the goddess Mefitis and was in use from the fifth century BC onwards. On the hill of Serra di Vaglio was the settlement instead, with its princely tombs, occupied between the fifth and the third century BC.

The town's name is traced back to Balios, in Greek myth the forefather of a breed of horses: they were probably raised here. The Museo delle Antiche Genti di Lucania also holds the so-called Lucanian portrait of Leonardo da Vinci, an alleged likeness that surfaced in 2008. There are 2,074 residents.
