Lauria

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 13,262 · Postal code: 85044

In 1806 French troops under General Masséna put Lauria to the sword and the torch for having stood with the Bourbons: the town archive was lost in the massacre, which is why less is known of its early history than anyone would like. The first document to name it, as Uria, dates from 1079.

Roger of Lauria came from here, the admiral who commanded the Aragonese fleets in the thirteenth century. The town, 13,262 residents, is split into two quarters, the upper one with the castle and the lower one; above them all stands the Sirino massif, with Monte Papa at 2005 metres and snow six months a year.
