Saint Nicholas and the Madonna del Sirino
📅 Every year, on 6 December
Lagonegro's patron is Saint Nicholas of Bari, on 6 December; but the town's calendar turns around the Madonna delle Nevi, who in summer climbs to the top of Monte Sirino.
Lagonegro bought its own freedom twice. In 1551, through the work of Paolo Marsicano, it broke free of feudal rule by annexing itself to the royal demesne, and for the occasion changed its name to Lacus Liber, free lake. That was not enough: in 1649 the town was put up for auction again and had to pay the treasury another heavy sum to stay demanial.
You enter the old town through the Porta di Ferro, whose stonework was redone in 1552 and carries the arms of the no-longer-feudal town: Saint Michael killing the dragon. The town, 5,725 residents, sits halfway between the Sirino massif and the Tyrrhenian, and the Mango family comes from here — the singer Giuseppe and his daughter Angelina, winner at Sanremo.
