Lavello

Province: Potenza · Region: Basilicata · Population: 13,590 · Postal code: 85024

Lavello's coat of arms shows a tower in flames: in 1298 Charles I of Anjou had the town burned as punishment for siding with the Ghibellines in the revolt of 1268, and most of it went up. Here the Lombard duke Sicard had been killed in 839, and here Conrad IV, son of Frederick II, died in 1254.

The name comes from labellum, a cattle trough: Lavello stands halfway between the Apulian plains and the Vulture pastures, on the transhumance drove roads, and it is the northernmost comune in Basilicata. The ducal palace, once the Swabian fortress, is now the town hall and houses the antiquarium. The population is 13,590.

Saint Maurus the Martyr, patron of the ancient Daunian Forentum

📅 Every year, on 2 May

Lavello celebrates Saint Maurus the martyr on 2 May; the northernmost municipality of Basilicata stands on a ridge above the Crapelotto stream, and its origins trace back to the ancient Daunian-Roman settlement of Forentum.
